Of course, now it’s hard to imagine anyone but Russell Crowe as the star of Gladiator, however the role almost went to Mel Gibson. He turned down the role of Maximus and starred in the film What Women Want, while Crowe earned an Oscar for his portrayal of Maximus.

Although Patrick Swayze is almost synonymous with the film Ghost, the role of Sam Wheat almost went to Bruce Willis instead. Funnily enough, if he had taken the role he would have played alongside his then-wife Demi Moore. He chose to star in The Bonfire of the Vanities instead.
