Author Roald Dahl Hated Gene Wilder’s Performance
Author Roald Dahl actually hated Wilder’s performance in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl hoped for a British comedy actor like Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan or Ron Moody to play Wonka. It wasn’t only Wilder’s role that upset Dahl. He also complained about the musical score, claiming it made the film feel too saccharine. Dahl even put it in his will that his sequel book never be adapted into a film. So, we hope Wilder did not take it personally!
Gene Wilder Felt Bad About Keeing The Kids On Edge
We all remember the crazy mood swings from Wonka in the film. Apparently, director Mel Stuart liked to keep everything unpredictable for the cast. Ostrum (who played Charlie) revealed in the film that neither him nor Jack Albertson (who played Grandpa Joe) were forewarned that Wilder would scream at them. Wilder was forced to hold back during rehearsal, so the reactions would be more genuine while the cameras recorded. According to Peter Ostrum, Wilder was often fighting back the urge to warn him that he would be screaming in the scene.
