While the cars could be a big issue if they were parked on his land due to the pollution that they could cause, it was also a risk for him that the landfill in the village would have the same effect. Due to the way that soil works, events like rain could cause toxins and chemicals to seep from the landfill into the earth and make its way to his soil, polluting it and ruining the quality of his crops.

Indeed, the troubles Davao faced were manifold. One problem that can come from landfill in the environment is that it can produce a liquid called leachate when it rains. This liquid is highly toxic, and if it enters into the soil below the ground it can spread far beyond the landfill that it originates from. If this liquid is absorbed by crops it can ruin them and turn them barren which would obviously be a disaster for someone whose livelihood comes from farming.
