Goodfellas
Perhaps, the ultimate gangster movie in history. That is, besides The Godfather trilogy of course. I mean you had Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco! One of the best improvised moments came from Joe Pesci, playing Tommy. In the scene his character was angry for being called a “funny guy.” Thus, Pesci improvised the response, “Do I amuse you?” Classic.
The Silence of the Lambs
It’s hard to really appreciate how outstanding Anthony Hopkins was as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Not only did he give a chilling performance, but many of Lecter’s ticks were improvised by Hopkins! Of course, we have to pay tribute to that iconic monologue to Jodie Foster about enjoying some human liver with, “fava beans and a nice Chianti.” During the rehearsal, Hopkins invented what became Hannibal Lecter’s signature hiss. Incredible.
