Howard Johnson’s

Howard Johnson’s opened in 1925 and was one of the first fast food joints to give the option of indoor dining. It first opened as a soda stand in Massachusetts but successfully franchised (one of the first in the US) after the Great Depression. In 1954, the company wanted to try breaking into the hotel industry. The restaurants eventually became motor lodges for those on road trips. The company now is a chain of hotels and motels around the country.
