Diego Maradona is known as the greatest soccer player of all time. He played for his native country Argentina in multiple World Cup games. Obviously, this meant that he made quite a fortune during his career. Sadly, his reputation for not paying taxes caught up to him when the Italian Tax Authority informed him he had to pay $54 million in back taxes. After the ordeal, he filed for bankruptcy.

John Arne Riise

John Arne Riise rose to prominence as a soccer player, but is sadly also known for being one of the youngest professional athletes to go completely broke. His former agent, Einar Baardsen, even dropped him. Riis claimed that he lost his money due to “poor management” and bad investments that his manager had advised him on.  Even though Riise was earning 50,000 pounds per week, he was reportedly in 100,000 pounds in debt.
