Buddy Ebsen wanted to make sure his character was authentic, and so he decided to learn to play bluegrass music. He took up some of the instruments that are integral to the Appalachian mountains music. He even released his music to the public, that absolutely loved it.

His Inspiration
Paul Henning came up with the concept of the show when he was visiting Civil War battle sights in the South, he wondered what it would be like for someone from a rural upbringing would react to moving to a upper-middle class neighborhood. He also considered setting the show in New York City, but chose California instead.
