Looking For Attention

So remember how Gene Wilder saw his sister performing and wanted to learn from her acting teacher? There’s a bit more to that story. At age 11, he watched his sister perform a monologue and noticed how everyone was captivated by her. This was during his early years and he had gone through some trauma dealing with his mother’s illness. He needed love and attention from his parents, but it was difficult at the time. Thus, he saw acting on stage as a way to get the attention he had been craving.

Besides staring Gilda’s Club to raise awareness about cancer, Wilder also worked on a special book. With the help of the oncologist Steven Piver, he co-authored the book Gilda’s Disease in 1998. Within the book, he discuses the cancer Radner suffered from and how it affected him. Unfortunately, Gene was even diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1999. Luckily, in 2005, it went into remission after both chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
