Initially, when Scranton and Stamford merged, they planned to have all of the Stamford characters eventually leave. Either they would quit, be fired or something would drive them off The Office. However, Ed Helms blew them away as Andy, and they kept him on as a regular.

Back on the first season they didn’t even have real computers. Thus, The Office producers told the actors to all bring in paperwork so it would appear like they were busy with background work.
