Difficult Transition
Once Shirley Temple began to grow up, her film career got more difficult. Her 1940 picture, The Blue Bird tanked at the box office. Then her next movie also didn’t do well. During the 40’s, Temple tried to keep up with acting, but never reached the same stardom as her childhood success. Sadly, the audiences just did not want to see that cute little girl who sang, “Animal Cracks (in My Soup)” grow up.
On Screen Kiss
In the movie, Miss Annie Rooney (1942), Shirley really turned heads when her co-star, Dickie Moore, gave her cheek a chaste kiss. Although it was an innocent scene, the audience had never seen Temple quite like that before. They weren’t quite prepared for it yet.
