Sam’s role in the The Big Lebowski opened the opportunity for him to play Kermit Newman in The Contender. The director of the film, Rod Lurie, liked how Elliott and Jeff Bridges worked together. When Bridges decided to join the film, Rod also sent Elliott a script. Luckily, he accepted the offer.
