Clapton told NPR in 2007 that: “The thing about that kind of addiction that’s pretty funny, on reflection, is that I always thought, ‘I’m handling this. I can handle it. I can stop anytime. I just don’t want to stop right now.’” Luckily for him, by 1974 Boyd decided to finally leave Harrison, and she and Clapton, now drug-free, started living together.

Clapton and Boyd officially tied the knot in 1979, however she didn’t have much luck with this second marriage. Clapton was also an alcoholic throughout the majority of their marriage, which led her to begin heavily drinking as well. Unfortunately, Clapton was also unfaithful to her. By 1989, the two were divorced.
