“Layla” was released on the album Clapton released with his post-Cream band Derek and the Dominoes. The album, released in 1970, was called Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs and is often regarded as Clapton’s best. It also included his version of Billy Myles’ song “Have You Ever Loved a Woman,” whose lyrics describe an obsession with a close friend’s spouse.

In a 2005 interview with CNN, Boyd described Clapton and the song he wrote about her: “I think that he was amazingly raw at the time. He’s such an incredible musician that he’s able to put his emotions into music in such a way that the audience can feel it instinctively. It goes right through you.”
