Wayne has claimed that he had always attempted to have racial equality in his films. However, his justifications were incredibly insensitive when looking at contemporary standards. He stated that he puts ‘the black’ actors in their proper position.

It also seems Wayne used to hold Native Americans in disdain. He has been reported saying that he doesn’t believe ‘we’ did anything wrong in taking this amazing country away from them. His justification was that there was plenty of people needing land and the Indians were being selfish.
