Sambo’s

Sambo’s was a highly controversial restaurant chain which caused many arguments due to its name, which is based on a racist vaudeville character. The company finally agreed to change its name, but that wasn’t enough, as it filed for bankruptcy in 1981. By 1982, the chain became totally defunct. Just one location remains in Santa Barbara, and in 2020 it also changed its name.

Tops Drive Inn

Top Drive Inn was a classic drive-in location based in Arlington, Virginia that was founded in 1953. It eventually expanded to 18 different locations in the greater D.C. area. Eventually it ended up merging with Gino’s Hamburgers in 1967, resulting in its locations either being rebranded or sold.
