Dee Rees got herself an Academy nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the amazing film, Mudbound. She adapted it from a novel by author Hillary Jordan, but also mixed in some of her family and specially grandmother’s, own personal history. The intense and emotional film only becomes all the more powerful knowing her connection. The incredibly talented Rees also wrote and directed for shows like Empire, Electric Dreams and When We Rise.

Patty Jenkins

How can we not mention Patty Jenkins and her work on Wonder Woman? Upon the release of Wonder Woman, Jenkins earned the biggest domestic film opening out of female directors in history. Oh and she became the first ever female director to direct an American studio superhero film. The film went on to become the highest-grossing film ever directed by a female, surpassing Phyllida Lloyd’s record for Mamma Mia! Incredible! Also, um it has Gal Gadot…no need to say anything else.
