Wondering who were the geniuses, aka the directors, behind your favorite films? With huge blockbusters like Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time and even back to hits like Spirited Away, we decided it was time to pay tribute to the directors. Yes, of course that’s what award season is for, but it never hurts to pay respects. Here are some of the most prominent directors today.
Ava DuVernay
Who else could we have first but the incredible Ava DuVernay? Everyone is talking about her recent film, A Wrinkle in Time, based on the children’s novel. Her film’s budget was over $100 million, so she became the first African American female to direct a movie with that big of a budget. Anyway, DuVernay also demonstrated her incredible talent with Selma (2014). With Selma, she made history as the first black female director nominated for a Golden Globe and also Academy Award for Best Picture. Her Netflix documentary 13th was a powerful exploration of mass incarceration in America. Basically, anything she touches turns to gold. Go see A Wrinkle in Time now!
Chistopher Nolan
As far as directors go, this guy is not new on the scene, but everyone continues to celebrate Christopher Nolan. Recently, he gained critical acclaim for Dunkirk. For the film, Nolan got his very first Academy nomination for Best Director. From all his outstanding work, including films like Memento, The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception to name a few, he’s accumulated 10 Oscar wins and 34 nominations. Not too shabby.
