Despite being a ratings jauggernaut, the show was cancled in what TV executives refer to as “The Rural Purge.” It referred to the belief that audiences interests’ were shifting towards shows that were more “sophisticated” like M*A*S*H.

Outside of his work acting on Beverly Hillbillies, Max Baer Jr. also turned his talents towards becoming a producer. He was quite successful as well, with his specialty being taking low budget projects and turning them into big budget returns, like Macon County Line.
