Apparently, watching Wood perform this scene was so upsetting that actress Bette Davis threatened to quit if the director forced Wood to film it again. Thus, they used a double for the re-shoot. The double got tangled in kelp and almost drowned! Eventually, the scene was actually cut from the film…so much for all the trouble.

They were able to date Wood’s death to be about midnight, judging from the contents in her stomach. However, she went missing at 11:05 pm, but the ship to shore phone call did not happen until 1:30 in the morning. Then the Coast Guard did not hear word until 3:30 in the morning. So, what was the cause for such delay??
