Cleese got the idea from a history book that spoke of real troops meant only to taunt the opposing side leading up to a battle. Couple with the animal catapult that dates back to Roman tactics of throwing rotting animals and fecal matter on approaching enemies.

The Extras In The Movie Were Students Or Tourists.
Needing many extras for the wedding scene, passers by were simply asked if they’d like to part of the production, given costumes and joined in on the hilarity. The final battle scene with Arthur’s army was actually played by students cast from a nearby university.
