Hercules [1997]
We’re going to kick off our list with a long time favorite: Hercules. This animated film was an instant classic as Disney hired talented filmmakers to focus on Greek mythology and the origin of Hercules. While the film wasn’t as dark as the mythological story, it was great fun with wonderful visuals and excellent voice acting. Film production would go smooth and the movie would rack up over $146 million at the box office, spawning a spinoff TV show.

Released in 2009, Up tells a heartwarming (and wrenching) tale of an old man living life after the loss of his wife. The story was equal parts accessible and deep. This film has one of the strongest opening sequences in Disney history and it’s a surefire tearjerker for sentimental types.
